Choosing To Give Back

From Journey Back to Awesome… to helping someone else find their way there too. There was something pretty special happening at Duke House this week.

We welcomed back Ross McCook from Heart for Youth, who has been part of the YIT journey in our fight against youth suicide from the very beginning. He has helped train mentors to walk alongside young people through some really tough times.

But this time, Ross was working with a group of our own young people. Young people who have been through our Journey Back to Awesome programme. Who have faced their own challenges, found support, discovered their strengths and started to see that life really can get better. And now, they’re choosing to give back.

They’re learning how to walk alongside other young people - not as experts, but as people who get it. Because sometimes, hearing someone say: “I’ve been there too. I understand. You’re not alone.” can make all the difference.

This is what Journey Back to Awesome is all about. Creating a ripple of hope - where young people who have been supported can, in time, become part of the support system for someone else.

A huge thank you to Ross for continuing to believe in our young people and for being part of the YIT whānau from the start.

Because when we walk alongside each other, the journey feels a little less lonely.
