Something to look forward to

When life feels hard, having something to look forward to can make a bigger difference than we sometimes realise.

It might be a favourite meal, seeing a friend, learning something new, or simply knowing that there’s a place where you belong, people who understand, and something fun planned.

That’s one of the things we love about our Journey Back to Awesome Support Groups.

Every two weeks, our young people come together for mutual support, life skills, dinner, connection and, importantly, fun. Our groups create a regular touchpoint in their week. Something to anticipate, participate in and enjoy, while building confidence and practical skills along the way.

And we don't believe fun has to be complicated.

Recently, our young people have been:

  • Building a set list for a shared CD

  • Crafting CD covers

  • Making sushi

  • Having a build-your-own-burger night

  • Creating paper mosaic caricatures

  • Making candles

  • Enjoying a cacao & curry night

  • Building their own tacos & playing games

  • Making dumplings & learning flax weaving

  • …and plenty more!

  • These might sound like simple activities, but they're so much more than that.

They're opportunities to try something new, laugh together, learn a skill, build friendships and create memories.

Sometimes, having something good in your calendar can be the first little step towards believing that there can be more good things ahead.

That's why connection, routine, purpose and having something to look forward to are such important parts of the Journey Back to Awesome.
